Shawn Verfaillie received his Bachelor of Musical Arts Degree in Viola Performance with a concentration in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and holds a Master of Arts in Music Education and Violin Performance with a (specialization in String Pedagogy) from Columbia University.
Mr. Verfaillie also studied at Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, Hartt Suzuki Institute, Tanglewood Music Institute and the Mozarteum Musik Akademie in Salzburg, Austria.
Mr. Verfaillie has served as faculty member at the Bermuda School of Music (Hamilton, BDA), The Cape Cod Conservatory of Music and Art (MA), The Academy of Performing Arts (MA), Indian Hill Arts School of Music (MA), Mt. Carmel School of the Arts (NY) and the Cape Cod Academy.
Additionally, he has held the position of District Strings Teacher and Orchestra Director for Dennis-Yarmouth, Barnstable and Nauset public school systems. He has served as an adjudicator for the All-Cape & Islands Music Festival and the Rhode Island Music Educator's Association (RMEA).
Currently, Mr. Verfaillie serves as faculty member for the Nantucket Community Music Center as their Suzuki Violin Instructor. He is also the founder and Artistic Director of Kingsbury Strings and Kingsbury Strings Studio. Mr Verfaillie is a member of the Suzuki Association of America.
Mr. Verfaillie has served as violinist and violist for the Cape Symphony Orchestra and Cape Cod Sinfonietta (MA), Ensemble Philidor (MA), New Arts Chamber Orchestra (NY), American Symphony Orchestra League, Burmingham Bloomfield Symphony, Gilbert & Sullivan Society Orchestra, Lansing and Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestras (MI) and the Salzburg International Music Festival Orchestra (Austria). He has also served as violinist for the Bermuda Heritage Concert Series and the Bermuda Philharmonic (BDA).
Currently, Mr. Verfaillie serves as section violinist for the Simon Sinfonietta (MA), the Chatham Chorale Chamber Orchestra (MA), the Falmouth Chorale Chamber Orchestra (MA) and is the Music Director and Concertmaster for Kingsbury Strings Chamber Ensemble.
In 1993, Mr. Verfaillie was awarded the Norwegian Government's Ministry of Culture Scholarship for advanced research in the Arts. His research paper investigated the compositional and cultural aspects of Edward Grieg's chamber music. The research project culminated in a series of chamber music performances at Columbia University and Alice Tully Hall in New York.
Mr. Verfaillie has worked with the Visual Arts Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to develop a music curriculum for strings using the museum's Contemporary Arts Collections. The curriculum was entitled: "Engaging the Imagination - Discovering the Expressive Qualities of Music Through Experiences with Art".
In 2003, Mr. Verfaillie was responsible for establishing and developing Bermuda's first Community Music Resource Center at the Bermuda College. It is the first comprehensive educational music facility in Bermuda. It's objective is to encourage, promote and develop music education in Bermuda. In turn, providing opportunities to further enhance community awareness and appreciation for the Arts.
A benefit concert was presented to raise the initial funding for the Resource Center. The concert was a collaborative effort, featuring Mr. Verfaillie's students from Bermuda and Cape Cod, MA.
